Guest post by Scot "the Milk Man" Fovel...
2008 - Boy, oh boy, oh boy...what a year in film! *pause* First and foremost, I'd like to congratulate the winners [clap, clap, clap]! I must say, however, last night's winners we're not too much of a surprise. And really, the only shock of the whole night was Hugh Jackman, and how good he actually was [didn't see that coming]! Here are a couple of other things I noticed:
Anne Hathaway has an amazing voice and just became 6 times more beautiful
Ben Stiller is the absolute man...can't wait to youtube
Alan Arkin must be like 100 years old "Seamore-Phillip Hoffman" C'MON!
Oh, Mr. Hoffman, by the way ...that's a wonderful doo-rag you're wearing
Sweet Jesus, Meryl Streep's daughter is freaking hot!!! HOW THE?!?!
Steve Martin and Tina Fey should really do more together...hilarious
Jack Black is just an overall fantastic person
Ok, that being said...let's get to the Oscar winners! IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER........
BEST ART DIRECTION: THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON
To all of those idiots out there that actually thought this movie would get shut out...idiots.
BEST VISUAL EFFECTS: THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON
And another one for CCOBB!! I think that these visual effects are revolutionary. I've never seen anything like this before. I mean, the Dark Knight and Iron Man were good, don't get me wrong....but this is like when the Matrix first came out with all its jazz. Can't compete, babe...you just can't compete.
BEST MAKE UP: THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON
I thought this was interesting. You really do have three movies nominated on opposite sides of the spectrum. Ok, so HellBoy II: The Attack of the Clones was actually a very classic style rubber- looking makeup. We haven't seen that since Star Wars!!! It's real makeup...they made a choice there. The Dark Knight has to be the most iconic makeup. EVERYONE will be the joker for Halloween! It's just like the scream mask. And then there's Benny Boy and his circus. There's a fine line between what visual effects is, and what makeup is. We haven't been here before, so the votes lean towards CCOBB.
BEST COSTUME DESIGN: THE DUCHESS
There's no way in hell a period piece doesn't win this. It's kinda obvious, there's The Duchess...and then there's everything else.
BEST SOUND EDITING: THE DARK KNIGHT
Yes...yes...this makes sense...action movie...yes...
BEST SOUND MIXING: SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE
OH C'MON! THE SLUMDOG TRAIN IS ALREADY CHUGGING?!?!?! I definitely thought this would be The Dark Knight...I was definitely wrong.
BEST ANIMATED FILM: WALL-E
This is the easiest pick of the night.
BEST FILM EDITING: SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE
A great pick by the Academy. Honestly, the editing in this film was so crucial to the energy created. All of the flashbacks were very well timed...all of the scene changes were smooth as a babies bottom.
BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY: SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE
Another no brainer in my book...this was my should/will win #3!!!!
BEST ORIGINAL SCREEPLAY: MILK
"This piece of work is my life." A landmark speech given by a very gay man. This was ground breaking and amazing to see...I am very happy to have seen it live. Milk was original and very well executed in the writing department. It timed well with Prop 8 and the academy ate it up. I might, however, still think that WALL-E is a bit more original...
BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY: SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE
As anticipated, this film is cleaning up with its 4th award. I knew it was going to win, but I have to say that the story of Mr. Ben Button [F. Scott Fitzgerald] is quite a masterpiece. As far as adaptation is concerned, maybe a little worse then Slumdog. Not sure how I feel about this one.
BEST ORIGINAL SCORE: SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE
A fantastically original score that is very independent sounding. The Academy has wanted to recognize a different sounding score like this for a long time!
BEST ORIGINAL SONG: SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE
"Jai Ho" was definitely the best out of the two Slum songs. It's bollywood, baby...it's all bollywood!
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: PENELOPE CRUZ
I honestly would not have been surprised if any one of these nominees were picked. Penelope was good. Very good. Personally, I loved Henson. We're moving on.
*Quick nerdy side note: Kiera Knightly got super snubbed on this list of nominees. Get Angelina out of here!
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: HEATH LEDGER
I say god damn! I should have put my three grand on Heath and won three hundred bucks. This is another big speech that was quite moving. It got sucked in...I'll admit it.
BEST DIRECTOR: DANNY BOYLE
An absolute should/will win for me. I do like the other guys a lot, but no one can stop the Slumdog train!
Also, if I could just interrupt myself for one second to say...#7 LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!!!! SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE!!!!! TODAY'S LAWRENCE OF ARABIA!!!!!
BEST ACTRESS: KATE WINSLET
It's a Winslet world we all live in. There's nothing we can do about it. What's done is done. Personally, I think that Streep's daughter should have won this category.
BEST ACTOR: SEAN PENN
My buddy and I bet a pizza on this one. He picked Penn and I picked Rourke. Now, I gotta tell ya I'm a Langella fan. Around Feb. 21st, I realized he wasn't gonna win. SO, I felt like the Winslet thing, we're all living in a Rourke world. KABOOM! Suddenly, I'm 17/19 with my guesses, and I'm a Pizza Hut stuffed crust pepperoni pizza down in the hole! I remember screaming and yelling, "I want to switch to Penn, but I can't because I have a pie on it!" And, "Penn's gonna win, I shouldn't have made that bet!" All I ask is that PriceWaterhouseCoopers didn't give some blank envelope copies to the right person at the right time. You know who you are. 2008 is the year of the monumental speeches! Penn had a great one.
I want to add that my thought behind this Rourke pick was assuming this would be his last chance at getting an oscar. I figured the academy would recognize a guy who's giving it his last go! Now, I understand that Mickey Rourke is rising again...and he just may have another chance...
BEST PICTURE: SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE
I don't think anyone is surprised about this. At one point, I started to wonder if Milk would sneak up and steal it, but then my senses came back to me. It's a great movie. It's also a tiny bit overrated. Whatt'ya want...
